One of the film’s main characters is a promiscuous married woman named “Mrs. Robinson” who seduces a young boy fresh out of college. Simon, who had only gotten as far as “Here’s to you, “Mrs. Roosevelt,” merely substituted “Robinson” for “Roosevelt” and the rest is history.

In late ’63-early ’64, the garage band song, “Louie Louie” by the Kingsmen, became so controversial that it was banned for a short while from many radio stations nationwide. This included the entire state of Indiana due to a directive from then governor, Matthew Welsh, who declared the tune “pornographic.”

The ban in the Hoosier state prompted the FBI to open an investigation.

It was finally determined the public was hearing lyrics that were not truly there, and in fact, the words were mostly indistinguishable.

The ruckus gradually subsided and the tune eventually became the classic it is today.
